Ripple CTO: XRP Will Continue As Bridge Currency

Ripple CTO David Schwartz has noted that RLUSD and XRP will complement each other rather than competing, contrary to many claims in the media. Ripple’s expansion into the stablecoin market was a notable move that represents a calculated enhancement of the XRP Ledger (XRPL) ecosystem. The company launched RLUSD in December , and according to Schwartz, the introduction of the stablecoin will support a broad range of new applications while complementing the use of XRP, the native digital asset of the XRPL. In a recent video shared by crypto commentator John Squire (@TheCryptoSquire) on X, Schwartz outlined how RLUSD is designed to work along with XRP rather than compete with it. “XRP is the native currency,” he said, “but the ledger was built to support any asset, crypto or fiat, issued and traded on the DEX.” Auto-Bridging and Asset Interoperability on XRPL One of the central features of the XRPL decentralized exchange (DEX) is its auto-bridging mechanism , which automatically uses XRP as an intermediary to facilitate trades between two assets. This means that when users trade assets on the ledger, XRP is natively employed to optimize routing and execution, regardless of whether those assets are fiat-backed, tokenized, or cryptocurrencies. This utility-centric approach underpins Ripple’s strategic positioning within the digital asset landscape. Schwartz noted that bringing credible assets like RLUSD onto the DEX will drive trading volume, producing both direct and indirect benefits for users, developers, and applications. As Schwartz described, the stablecoin introduces fresh liquidity and market activity to the XRPL while reiterating XRP’s role as the operational bridge asset . He said, “XRP will continue to be used as a bridge currency.” The CTO noted that the ledger’s design allows for this dual functionality without requiring changes to its structure or principles. $XRP and $RLUSD are about to flip the script Forget old money systems. Ripple is building a machine with utility at its core. This isn’t about hype. It’s about who controls the rails of the new financial system. Bet against it? Ripple’s payment products will continue to rely on XRP for bridging currencies across jurisdictions, particularly in international settlements. RLUSD, on the other hand, is positioned to drive adoption in areas such as real-world asset (RWA) tokenization , foreign exchange markets, and enterprise use cases. Schwartz emphasized that RLUSD opens the door for on-chain applications that need stable value representation without sacrificing speed or scalability. Given the XRPL’s existing strengths, like low fees, fast settlement, and high throughput, RLUSD will stimulate innovation without displacing XRP’s core utility . By bringing a trusted stablecoin to a high-performance blockchain, Ripple is enhancing the network’s flexibility and broadening its relevance in cross-asset trading and financial infrastructure.
